Puppy socialization and obedience classes have been available in Calgary since the mid 80's. The idea was a matter of necessity as the local Humane Society was being forced to accept a large number of young unmanageable dogs. Most were being relinquished due to unacceptable behavior. The need for help for new puppy owners was recognized and classes started.
Years ago, it was thought that a dog could not be trained until it was 6 months of age. Nothing could be further from the truth. Puppies can begin to learn obedience exercises as early as 7 weeks of age, although most schools will want to ensure that puppies have had two sets of shots.
