Image of Barbet This is the oldest French water dog; the forerunner of the poodle, Newfoundland and other water dogs. 

The Barbet is a hunting companion, water fowler and sailor's assistant. He is a mid-sized dog.  The Barbet is docile, sociable, even-tempered and gets along will with other animals. The coat is high maintenance, requiring regular brushing.
